SCC On Lockdown Following Riot

Sonora, CA — Two Sierra Conservation Center inmates are recovering from injuries after a riot that involved more than 160 men Monday.

Lieutenant Kenny Calhoun with the prison says the racial riot between Southern Hispanics and Blacks happened on the Calaveras Yard during feeding. Reports indicate the riot lasted about five minutes.

With additional staff, and the use of chemical agents, the riot was controlled. Calhoun says there were no injuries to staff; however two inmates were transported to a local hospital due to head injuries. At this time, the cause of the riot is unknown.
