City Of Sonora’s Budget Is Balanced

Sponsored by:

The recently passed City of Sonora budget is both balanced and in the black.

Sonora City Councilman Matt Hawkins was Wednesday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.

According to Hawkins, “All City services are covered. We haven’t cut anyone. Taxes have stayed the same and we are not looking to raise taxes.”

When asked about business in downtown Sonora, Hawkins responded, “It’s normal to have turnover in any business district. It’s a shame that we have had this type of (heavy) turnover all around the same time. The reality is that we have other businesses coming in.”

Hawkins continued, “There are some issues. The majority of buildings in downtown Sonora are owned by downtown entities and due to that, the rents tend to be too high for this particular area. Business owners also struggle with the laws that have been enacted by the State of California. The City of Sonora listens to and works with the downtown merchants.”

There will soon be two public bathrooms near the Sonora Farmer’s Market. Hawkins said that there is a building owned by the City of Sonora, across the street from the Farmer’s Market. Hawkins stated that the budget allows money to be allocated to fix up that building, so that there will soon be two clean, public restroom. The restrooms will be open seven days a week.

The “Newsmaker of the Day” is heard every weekday morning at 6:45, 7:45 and 8:45 on AM 1450 and FM 102.7 KVML.
