Leon “Sonny” Cozzo will conduct a tool care and sharpening demonstration at the Mother Lode Bonsai Club on Saturday, October 6. His free public presentation will follow the club’s 9:00 a.m. meeting at the San Andreas Central Library, 1299 Gold Hunter Road (off Mountain Ranch Road) in San Andreas.
“Dull tools create sloppy cuts that cause bad scarring on bonsai trees,” said Cozzo. “If you take just a few minutes to clean and sharpen your cutting implements, the results will be well worth the effort.” He will show the best techniques for achieving clean edges on trunks and branches without the cost of expensive sharpening equipment.
Cozzo is the club’s vice-president, a former director, and has been active in various bonsai organizations since 2006. His passion for raising miniature trees has grown over the years since starting with a bonsai kit, containing Japanese black pine seeds, a pot and some soil. This eventually developed into Internet searches for select varieties and eventually into local bonsai nursery purchases.
Mother Lode Bonsai Club members come from Amador, Calaveras and Tuolumne counties, as well as valley communities. All are welcomed to attend and learn about this popular hobby, regardless of their levels of experience.
