About the Artist—
Originally born in Montana, 1939, Dale Bunse’s circumstances and artistic passions brought him to live, study, and teach in many places across the U.S., most notably the Willamette Valley in Oregon and our very own Sierra Nevada foothills.
As an art professor at Columbia College in Sonora for nearly 30 years, Dale helped “challenge and stretch his students’ imaginations” through unique and creative assignments, such as making ceramic boats for races in the campus reservoir. He was a prolific painter and potter, first selling his work from Bunse Pottery at home, and later from the Clayton Gallery in downtown Jamestown. He claimed he always found it hard to give advice to others about what to study because for him he had always known it was art. Dale loved the creative process, creative people, and helping folks discover art. This extended into his support for many other artists, including hosting shows of their work in his gallery.
To the end, Dale drew inspiration from the rolling hills around his home in Tuolumne County, the landscapes from his life in Willamette Valley, Oregon, and the majestic sceneries from his travels throughout the U.S. and the world. Both his teaching and his art were infused with the many experiences, cultures, and environments from his life. For him, and those who went along for the ride, every bend of the road and each curve of the hill was a landscape waiting to be painted.
