Central Sierra Audubon Society (CSAS) outing to Salt Springs Valley is set for Saturday, Feb. 3. This is one of the favorite field trips in Calaveras County with a variety of habitats including ponds, grassland, oak woodlands and resort lake. We usually see more than 50 species of birds. Primary targets will be Ferruginous hawks, Lewis’s woodpeckers and Rough-legged hawks. Meet at Barrow’s in Sonora at 8 a.m. to carpool to Copperopolis pond, about 1/4 mile along Rock Creek Road off Highway 4 near Copperopolis or meet at the pond at 9 a.m. Bring water and lunch which we will enjoy at the resort which also has restrooms available ($15 per car). Finish around 2 p.m., but if you need to depart earlier, we will get to the resort around 11:30 a.m. Rain will cancel. Trip leader is Paolo Maffei (209)532-8426.
