We would like to invite the community to join us this year for a screening of Sugarcane, an award-winning film on the impact of the residential schools. Please join Tuesday, September 30th as we remember, share truth and continue healing.

Three screening Locations:

Screenings:
● 10 AM: The Red Church Parish Hall (St. James Episcopal), Snell St., Sonora
● 2 PM: Chakachi-No Learning Center, hosted by Chicken Ranch Rancheria of Mewuk Indians, Jamestown
● 6 PM: Black Oak Casino Hotel Conference Room, hosted by the Tuolumne Band of Mewuk Indians

Doors open 30 minutes before each showing. Afterward, audiences can join Q&A discussions.
Rated R for some language and mature themes.

“This year our event has a slim budget, but it was important to still honor the day,” says committee chair Tamara Hansen (Oglala Lakota Nation). “We welcome donations of light refreshments, or bring your own snacks.”

The film centers on St. Joseph’s Boarding School near Lake William, British Columbia. “This story is powerful and beautifully told with stunning cinematography,” says committee member Morgan Vaughn (Mewuk). “Each voice is deeply moving, showing how these schools impacted Native communities in the late 1800s and 1900s.” Vaughn, who suggested the film after its 2024 release, notes that the legacy of these schools still echoes across North America.

Designated in 2016, Orange Shirt Day is held each year on Sep. 30th in the U.S. and Canada to honor more than 440,000 Native American children taken from their families and sent to at least one of 335 Indian Boarding Schools.
