No Kings Rally in Sonora on June 14: Standing Up for Democracy on Flag Day

On Saturday, June 14, Tuolumne County Indivisible will host a No Kings rally at Courthouse Park from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM as part of a national day of action rejecting authoritarianism and reclaiming democracy. The event coincides with Flag Day and the birthday of Donald Trump, a day he is turning into a spectacle with a full-blown taxpayer-funded military parade in Washington, D.C.

In small town Sonora, we had our largest protest on April 5th for the Hands Off movement of approximately 800 attending. We are seeing some of the largest protests in our county’s history with Trump’s egregious overreach of power.

Rather than singing Happy Birthday to Trump, over 1,800 events across the country are rising up to show that real power lies with the people.

“We’re standing up to the growing tyranny that’s been pushed on us. We’re here to say: in America, we don’t do kings,” says Jessica Williams.

The No Kings movement is a response to increasing authoritarian behavior from Trump and his allies: defying court rulings, targeting political opponents, eroding civil rights, defunding public media channels, attacking long-established Universities, and dismantling essential public services paid for by our tax dollars, all while enriching billionaires and donors.

The Sonora rally will feature speeches and peaceful, nonviolent protesting. Attendees are encouraged to bring signs affirming their commitment to democracy and rejecting authoritarianism.

This event is rooted in nonviolence. All participants are expected to engage in peaceful protest, practice de-escalation, and refrain from bringing weapons of any kind.
