Early spring is the time of year to prepare your bonsai trees for the growing season ahead and the Mother Lode Bonsai Club’s free public demonstration on Saturday, February 4 will assist you in doing just that. Guest speaker, Dan “Doc” Ward’s presentation on “Bonsai Tune-ups” will immediately follow the club’s monthly meeting at 10 a.m. in the San Andreas Central Library, 1299 Gold Hunter Road (off Mountain Ranch Road) in San Andreas.
Ward is a well-known Placer County bonsai expert, who resides in Granite Bay. His interest in this hobby started 41 years ago and has expanded into conducting classes to encourage interest in this “living art” form. In fact, he has lectured at Sierra College (horticultural department) in Rocklin, taught Master Gardeners’ classes for years, and currently leads weekly instructional groups on a variety of bonsai topics.
“The root system is the most important part of any plant or tree. It controls the oxygen and nourishment for healthy growth and literally, is the building structure for keeping it alive,” he said. “Bonsai tune-up is my method of generally describing how to create a root puck and then taking steps to repot, which in turn leads to compressing trees, tighter ramification and stronger trunk structure.”
A raffle for bonsai materials and a mentor-led workshop will be held after the demo. Workshop participants are encouraged to bring a bonsai tree, along with tools, wire and table covering.
