The new and stirring documentary, Miwuk, about the Southern Sierra Miwuk Tribe, whose ancestors date back thousands of years here in Mariposa County, will be screened at Coulterville’s IOOF, 5030 Main St., on Saturday, March 7th at 4 pm. After a sold-out crowd of the initial screening …requiring an encore showing… in early February in the town of Mariposa, the Northern Mariposa County History Center is delighted to be able to sponsor this screening in the North County. This film has produced strong interest from a number of foothill communities as well as from Senator Feinstein who has requested a copy.

The film features the personal stories of 7 people who share a rare glimpse into life growing up Miwuk in Mariposa County and Yosemite National Park. It encompasses their tribe’s effort to be recognized by the Federal Government, which began in the 1800’s and still continues. The individuals reveal broken promises that many people have no inkling about, supported by documents from the U. S. Government, as well as University research departments from all over the country.

Produced and edited by veteran Warner Bros. television editor, Bill Lowe, who notes “Some of the stories are heartwarming, and some are heartbreaking. I wanted the public to see a rare look inside the Southern Sierra Miwuk world. I hope afterwards, the viewer will have a better understanding of the Miwuk. “

This film is not recommended for young children. After the film, there will be a discussion period with members of the Southern Sierra Miwuk Nation. There will also be an opportunity to sign a petition supporting the tribe’s decades long efforts to gain federal recognition as an American Indian Nation.

Tickets are $10, with all proceeds benefiting the Miwuk Federal Recognition Efforts of the Southern Sierra Miwuk Nation. Tickets will be available at the NMCHC museum during regular hours, Thursday-Sunday, 10 a – 4 pm. They are also available for online purchase at eventbrite.com (there is a $2.10 fee/ticket). If not sold out in advance, tickets may be purchased at the door.

The Coulter Café’s Dinner & A Show, which begins at 5 pm that evening, will be donating a part of the proceeds towards the Miwuk recognition efforts. For information or reservations, call 209-878-3947.
