Fun alert! CAL FIRE, Women Veterans and Granny Basketball, OH MY! Sponsored by the Tuolumne County Chamber of Commerce, a fundraiser to benefit the Tuolumne County Women Veterans Memorial project, will be held Sunday, November 20 from 2 to 4 p.m. Admission is by donation. The Columbia Granny Basketball team, the Gold Diggers, will face off against the Women Veterans team, the Local Lively Ladies and then take on the TCU CAL FIRE team, the Flame Dunkers. This event is guaranteed to provide unique and seriously amusing entertainment for the whole family! All players will be following 1920 women’s basketball rules, which include no running, no jumping, no physical contact and just two dribbles. In addition, the court is divided into thirds with two players from each team restricted to their own third of the court. You have to see it to believe it!
The Columbia Gold Diggers are members of the national Granny Basketball(r) League, which boasts 43 teams in 10 states. The League is a 501(c)3 Corporation which, in addition to League games, play against other organizations to raise money for worthy causes. Players (who are “women of a certain age”) wear 1920s style uniforms consisting of bloomers, middy blouses and long stockings.
