Horticulturist Dick Reitz will present the essentials of tree anatomy and development on Saturday, November 4, hosted by the Mother Lode Bonsai Club. His presentation will follow a short organizational meeting, which starts at 10 a.m. at the San Andreas Central Library, 1299 Gold Hunter Road (off Mountain Ranch Road) in San Andreas. There is no charge to attend and all are invited regardless of levels of experience in bonsai.
“Whether they are full size trees or smaller bonsai specimens, their structures and how they grow are the same,” he said. “We’ll take a good look at plant bark layers and how nutritional fluids are transported within tree systems. Careful pruning techniques, for example, are critical. You’ll learn how to treat trees correctly to keep them healthy and alive.”
A native of Tuolumne County, Reitz was a professor for 20 years at the College of Southern Nevada where he taught ornamental horticulture. He also was head of their landscape department and a former International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist.
A raffle for bonsai materials and a mentor-led workshop will also be held after the presentation. Workshop participants are encouraged to bring a bonsai tree, along with tools, wire, table covering, and any questions.
