The first hike of the year for Tuolumne County Trailhead will be just over the Parrotts Ferry Bridge in Calaveras County. It’s a short, easy trail to Dutchess Mine. After about a mile, though steep switchbacks begin for an almost 1,000′ ascent up Table Mountain. After traversing the mountain’s flat top, the trail loops back downhill for a short, sweet, and satisfying 3 miles. On the way up there are sweeping views of New Melones Lake clear down to the Stevenot Bridge on Highway 49. At the summit, the mesa of Table Mountain reveals itself: golden grassland studded with oaks and gigantic weights used for helicopter load-moving exercises. The trip may be extended to include a drive up-river to check out Camp Nine.
