This event has been canceled.

The Columbia College Community Chorus, conducted by Dr. Daryl Hollinger, will perform its annual Spring concert at St. Matthew Lutheran Church on Saturday afternoon, April 25th, at 3:00 p.m., and again on Sunday, April 26th, also at 3:00 p.m. The church is located at 13880 Joshua Way in Sonora.

Opening with J.S. Bach’s Easter Cantata #4, Christ lag in todesbanden based on Martin Luther’s hymn, the concert showcases the chorus’s beautiful blend of voices in this emotion-filled work. Then two movements of Mendelssohn’s Psalm 42 will follow, one of the composer’s greatest achievements. Both works are accompanied by orchestra.

In the second half, Dr. Hollinger will delight the audience with music based on a water theme. The chorus performs in a plethora of styles with the familiar gospel songs Gather at the River, Wade in the Water and Deep River. The world premiere of The Ocean’s Song composed by Dr. Hollinger and based on a poem by his wife, Rev. Dr. Bonnie Hollinger, combines beautiful choral music with the orchestra’s imaginative musical depiction of crashing waves. The lively and joyful Take Me to the Water will end the concert.

Dr. Hollinger, well-known for his choral conducting and musical compositions in the Lancaster, Pennsylvania area, took over the reins of the Community Chorus almost five years ago − following John Carter’s retirement as the chorus’ long-time director. Daryl is a talented organist and composer, and teaches musicianship, music theory and piano at Columbia College. The Community Chorus also is fortunate to have Diane Day’s expert piano accompaniment for this concert.

Tickets are $12 each until April 24; and they will be available at the door for $15. Free admission for children age 12 and under, though they must have a ticket. Tickets are available at the Mountain Bookshop, Manzanita Bookstore, Murphys Music and online at www.manzanitabookstore.com/merchandise, or from any Community Chorus member.
