A new brochure about the history of Chinese Camp as written by students at Chinese Camp Science Academy will be the topic of a presentation at the Thursday, March 12, meeting of the Tuolumne County Historical Society. The society’s monthly meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month in the Community Room at the Tuolumne County Library at 480 Greenley Rd. in Sonora. Admission is free. The meeting is open to all interested members of the community. Sheri Betz and Linda Cazares, teachers at Chinese Camp Science Academy, will tell how they encouraged their 30 third through sixth grade students to research local history and to relate the stories that are included in the new brochure. The students paraphrased in their own words short vignettes highlighting Native American culture, the discovery of gold, the arrival of Chinese to the area around the school, Chinese heritage and Chinese Camp today. The new historical brochure was developed with help from the Tuolumne County Visitors Bureau with funding provided by the Sierra Pacific Foundation. Copies of the brochure will be available free of charge.
