Mother Lode Bonsai Club’s Saturday, September 7 meeting will focus on its fast approaching annual show but the public is invited to attend for information on readying bonsai trees for viewing. The meeting will be held at 9:00 a.m. at the San Andreas Central Library, 1299 Gold Hunter Road (off Mountain Ranch Road) in San Andreas. Among the many timely topics will be improving tree appearances, pot cleaning and the best display methods.
The meeting is intended as preparation for the club’s Fifth Annual Show and Exhibit, which will be held on Saturday, September 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. also at the San Andreas Central Library. Admission and parking are free.
“The annual show is our club’s biggest event of the year and is an opportunity for the public to view dozens of specially styled and designed trees by members,” said Richard McKinstry, club president. “The essential goal of bonsai is transforming a growing specimen into a miniature living sculpture, aged by natural elements. Viewed as such, bonsai has grown in popularity around the world today. Anyone with an interest in bonsai is invited.”
Bonsai demonstrations will be conducted at 10.30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. along with raffles for the featured trees after each demo. In addition, raffles will be held throughout the day as club fundraisers. A number of trees and other bonsai supplies will be available for purchase.
“Also planned is a basic styling class, limited to twelve participants. Conducted by club mentors on a do-it-yourself platform, it is an excellent way of educating people on how to start their own tree,” said McKinstry. “Class fee is $35. per person, which includes a plant, bonsai materials and an instructional sheet on care.”
