The Mother Lode Bonsai Club will feature Vince Owyoung as the presenting sensei, or teacher at its Saturday, April 6 meeting. His free demonstration will be on basic wiring for beginners and will immediately follow the club meeting at 9:00 a.m. in the San Andreas Central Library, 1299 Gold Hunter Road (off Mountain Ranch Road) in San Andreas.
“Wiring is a design technique used in shaping a tree to give it unique bonsai form. It’s a training process that bends branches in positions to emphasize movement or flow,” he said. “Wiring must be done with care and is crucial to the tree’s future growth and appearance. For example, you can turn an upright trunk into a cascade, or add a curve to its straight structure.”
Owyoung has been involved with raising and styling bonsai trees for more than 50 years. He has led numerous workshops at various area clubs and at California Shohin Society seminars. He also holds memberships in four Northern California bonsai organizations.
In addition, club mentors will be available to answer questions and provide assistance at the club’s monthly workshop activity. There is no charge but participants must provide their own plants and other bonsai materials, along with a table covering.
All are invited to attend and learn more about this popular hobby. Mother Lode Bonsai Club members come from Amador, Calaveras and Tuolumne counties, as well as the central valley. For more information, contact Richard McKinstry at  (209) 288-2330 or go to the club website at www.motherlodebonsai.org.
