Michael E. LaSalle will talk about his new book No Trail to Follow, the First Wagon Party to California in 1851, about the Bartleson-Bidwell party at the Aug. 8 meeting of the Tuolumne County Historical Society (TCHS).
The monthly TCHS gatherings are held at 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month in the Community Room at the Tuolumne County Library at 480 Greenley Rd. The gatherings are open to all interested members of the community. Admission is free.
No Trail to Follow tells the story of the Bartleson-Bidwell party which left Missouri in May, 1841. Using two first-hand accounts from the diaries of John Bidwell and James John, LaSalle tells how the party groped across uncharted territory on their journey west. LaSalle said the journey was a momentous event in the settlement of the West. Copies of the book will be available that night and at the Tuolumne County Museum at 158 Bradford St. in Sonora.
