This is the 47th year and the third event of 4 in its annual October festival. Held in a private home, and called a “Salon” Concert after the house concerts of history, the performance will provide an intimate and up-close experience for the audience. Janet Telford, festival board member and concert co-manager said, “This venue is not only beautiful but it will allow the audience to see, hear and be comfortable in the intimate setting of a private home. Doug and Sheri Fleming have a beautiful home and garden that is just a perfect setting for this type of event”.
The program will be performed by the San Francisco Bay area violin and harpsichord duo Bach Se Piace. The two members, Katherine Heater (harpsichord) and Anthony Martin (Violin) have been playing together as Bach Se Piace for over ten years. They have performed all of JS Bach’s music for keyboard and violin, as well as music by French, Italian, German, and 20th century composers and three generations of the Bach family. Individually they have appeared with most of the San Francisco Bay Area’s early music groups as well as nationwide and internationally. Katherine teaches at the University of California, Berkeley, and Anthony at Stanford University. PA proponent of childhood music education, Martin reflected on his early musical training: “I was a self-taught recorder player who got involved with early music quite naturally playing Renaissance dance music and consorts with like-minded enthusiasts at college. One thing led to another!”
The program, entitled a “Bach Family Reunion”, features music by J.S. Bach as well as his talented family members. Composers featured- all relatives of J.S. Bach- include Johann Bernhard Bach; Johann Christoph Bach; Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach; Johann Christian Bach; Wilhelm Friedrich Ernst Bach and, of course, J.S. Bach. The two performers will vary the program with duets and solos. Ensemble member, Anthony Martin said, “We are excited to be hosting a Bach Family Reunion in the Sierra Foothills. We will bring together four sons, a cousin, a grandson plus Sebastian himself to share the great variety of music that carries the Bach name.”
Cali Catering, a local, “mother/daughter team of lifetime foodies” will be providing light delicacies at intermission and more extensive food offerings and wine after the concert. According to their website, they say,
“We love to create mouth watering dishes for our friends and family…” Everything we make is fresh, homemade and we locally source many of our ingredients”.
Board member, and concert co-producer, John Carter said, “The Sonora Bach Festival gratefully acknowledges and thanks Dr. Douglas and Sheri Fleming for hosting this year’s Salon Concert. This will be a wonderful, rare and unique afternoon for music lovers of all ages in our Central Sierra foothills.”
Program will include: Suite #1 in D by Johann Bernhard Bach; Sonora in C by Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach; Fantasia in C Minor by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach; Trio in B by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach; Partita in B Flat by Johann Sebastian Bach; Sonata in B Flat by Johann Christian Bach; Sonora in C by Wilhelm Friedrich Ernst Bach; and Goldberg Suite in G by Johann Sebastian Bach
