Central Sierra Audubon Society has planned a birding outing to Lyons Dam for Thursday, Sept. 10.
Field trip leader Darcy Zimmerman says possible sightings may include bald eagles, from juveniles to mature adults, peregrine falcons, northern flickers, mergansers and other ducks, juncos, jays, woodpeckers (white-headed and downey), ospreys and owls. E-bird lists from July include a pileated woodpecker and a kingfisher, as well.
Zimmerman says the majority of the walk is relatively flat and easy, with a couple of optional short cuts that can entail brief steeper soft slopes or step-over obstacles with a total distance of approximately 3 to 3.5 miles round trip. Estimated time is 3 to 4 hours.
She recommends hiking shoes or boots. Bring binoculars, scopes, walking sticks, snacks and drinking water.
She will meet participants at 8:30 am at the parking area near the restroom at the lake. Look for the signed left turn off Highway 108 to Lyons Lake, just a mile or two east of Sierra Village. Follow the reasonable gravel road through the open gate for about 2 miles down to the lake and park in sight of the restroom. Rain will cancel.
