Wednesday February 2024 is Ash Wednesday, a sacred day that marks the first day of Lent, which is the preparation period for Jesus’s death and resurrection and culminates in Easter. It is an important day for Christians everywhere and also for local Lutheran christians at St. Matthew Lutheran in Sonora. A special service will be held on Wed, Feb 14 at 12pm at the church to commemorate Ash Wednesday and is open to members and the community. The service is intentionally planned to allow those working to attend on their lunch hour to recognize and honor this important day and begin to prepare for Jesus’s death and his resurrection and the celebration of Easter. The service will be a Lutheran traditional service with hymns, bible readings and a special message based upon Matthew 6;1-6 entitled “Secret Life with God” delivered by Pastor Tom Sharpe. At the service participants will be offered information about devotions for the observance of Lent delivered to them online that will assist them to prepare for Easter. During the six weeks preceeding Easter, the Lenten self study materials and resources will be helpful for a time of reflection and repentance. Participants will also be offered the optional ash in the sign of the cross placed on their foreheads as a symbol of repentance.
