Response to Flag Decision

The City of Sonora hears the concerns about our decision not to place flags on Washington Street for Flag Day during the “No Kings” protest event. The decision to forego displaying the flags was not taken lightly by our law enforcement personnel; because of this, all levels of City Government, including our Mayor and myself, supported the decision. I want to share with you the considerations behind our decision:

First, the placement of the flags on Washington Street for six (6) holidays a year is a long-standing volunteer effort of the men and women of the Sonora Police Department. All of them donate hours as an act of service to our Community, the Department, and our Country. Volunteer service is an organizational value embraced by the Department and a source of pride for City leadership and administration.

Secondly, the City of Sonora proudly protects and honors the constitutional rights of all people. Many of our employees have served and several are currently deployed, demonstrating the greatest sacrifice to protection of these founding principles. While we at the City trust and value the peacefulness, the loyalty and love of community, and the discipline local protestors showed in their demonstration of First Amendment rights during the “No Kings” protests, the City shoulders the responsibility to plan for their safety. Law enforcement is not a department that plans for the best possible outcome. Fortunately for everyone, they plan, mitigate, and train for the worst; they stand to protect the public for events they hope never come. The decision not to place flags was one of safety, not one of politics. And this decision may need to be made again.

Moving forward, the City will continue to do its best to balance the community’s appreciation for our flag-lined streets during these reflective moments of our Nation’s history with the realities of future events that may conflict with these observances. When resources allow, we will make every effort to place the flags after protest events. As City Administrator I will continue to prioritize community values and expectations, while ensuring the safety of our residents and staff, as well as balancing the demands our organization places on employees including their need for family, rest, and personal time.

I understand this moment in time is filled with a range of emotions. I challenge you to demonstrate our unity in celebration of this community value, please place a United States flag on your private property, home, or business. Let’s continue to send a clear message to all who pass, Sonora can stand united even in times of uncertainty and disagreement.

Sonora Police Department, thank you for giving and doing your best.
