For the first time in three years, the Motherlode Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee will hold an in-person event celebrating King’s birthday.
The theme of this year’s program is “Celebrating the Mother Lode’s Commitment to Equity, Fairness, and Justice” with panelists Andrea-Victoria Lisbon, co-founder of Stand Up, Speak Up, Speak Out; Stephanie Beaver-Guzman, Counselor at Columbia College; Thomas Moraitis, LGBTQ activist; and Nikki Coleman, Columbia College Prison Outreach Worker. Several singers will perform songs of protest and the Laurie Bailey Social Justice Award will go to the members of the Sonora City Council’s Social Equity Committee which recently developed a resolution affirming the city’s commitment to equity, fairness and justice.
It will take place on what would have been King’s 94th birthday: Sunday, January 15, at 2 p.m. in the Sonora High School Auditorium 430 N. Washington St. in Sonora. Reception with refreshments will follow in the school cafeteria. For more information, see motherlodemlk.org., and the Facebook page, Motherlode Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee,
