Sacramento, CA -- After further review, Attorney General Jerry Brown has ruled that an independent state pay commission has the authority to reduce salaries of California's elected officials during the middle of their terms.

The Department of Personnel Administration will now be allowed to cut legislators base salaries from $116,000 a year to $95,000 starting December 7th.

Brown's decision reverses a legal opinion his office issued this past summer in response to an inquiry by the California Citizens Compensation Commission.

Brown previously ruled that the cuts could not take effect until after the elections in 2010 and 2012.
