Snow Creates Unique Challenges For Ranchers

Bitter cold evening temperatures have replaced deep snow in the high Sierra´s ranching country.

The cold temperatures and deep snow pack have created some unusual problems for local cattlemen. Rancher Darren Hagata says cows can tolerate the cold, but require as much as 20-percent more food to maintain their body.

Ranchers at higher elevations must haul feed for their cattle through sometimes deep snow, often on treacherous roads. Snow levels are expected to remain high as warmer weather takes hold this week.
