Yosemite, C A -- Yosemite National Park will repair its highest crossing. The Park signed the Tioga Road Rehabilitation Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI). That means the park can rehabilitate, restore and resurface approximately 41 miles of the Tioga Road. The road is a popular east-west crossing of the Sierra Nevada and the stretch joins with Highway 120.
Park Officials say the repairs will focus on improving the safety of visitors and employees traveling on Tioga Road, maintaining the character of the road corridor, and restoring drainage features to control erosion. The plan includes redesigned roadside turn outs, parking at Tuolumne Grove and traffic flow. The rehabilitation also calls for scaling rock at select locations to help reduce rock fall potential.
Park Spokesperson Scott Gediman says, "Visitors should know there is no road closures planned. We plan on being able to do the work when the road is open and do the work with flaggers. Aside from some short delays, the public won't notice anything different about traveling Tioga Road."
The work is scheduled to begin in the spring 2014. There will be three phases, each one will occur over a two year period due to the seasonal closure of the Tioga Road.
