Yosemite, CA -- The Historic Preservation Program in Yosemite National Park has been awarded the Appleman-Judd-Lewis Award. The program was recognized for its expertise and outstanding contributions to cultural resource stewardship, and management, by certain employees of the National Park Service.
Program Officials say they won the award for working with all partners to make sure timely historic structure issues were dealt with and for implementing creative ways to fund preservation projects in the park. They say one project that stood out in 2011 was a group effort to preserve the historic Wawona Hotel fountain by the park's primary concessioner, DNC Parks and Resorts at Yosemite Inc., and the Yosemite Conservancy.
Program Officials say the award is given annually to encourage creativity in cultural resource work that can serve as models for programs throughout the park service.
The Award dates back to 1970 and is named for three former National Park Service employees: Historian Roy E. Appleman, Historical Architect Henry A. Judd, and Curator Ralph H. Lewis.
