Sierra River Cleaned Up

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — Attendance was down but a lot of trash was picked up at the Fourth Annual Great Sierra River Cleanup. Cleanups were held in Sonora and along the Clavey River.

Some of the more interesting items removed during this year’s cleanup include; a rubber chicken, a four-piece wooden toilet with a duct-taped seat, a concrete statue of a rabbit, and an old-fashioned lamp post.

Over the past four years they have collected 571 tons of paper trash, aluminum cans, plastic bags, cigarette butts, cardboard, glass bottles and other items.

The event is sponsored by the Sierra Nevada Conservancy (SNC) in partnership with 47 community organizations throughout the Sierra Nevada. SNC Executive Officer, Jim Branham says 2,800 volunteered this year, down from last year’s 3,600.
