Holiday Shopping Season In Full Swing
Sonora, CA-- The 2011 holiday shopping season has begun in the Mother Lode.
Tuolumne County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO George Segarini says sales so far have been very promising for local merchants.
"I think we're going to definitely improve over last year's sales," said Segarini. "The activity at least up to this point has been very good and better than last year, so I would anticipate that to continue."
He also encourages residents to do their shopping close to home.
"The Chamber has been emphasizing to shop locally for a long time," said Segarini. " It benefits all the local merchants and our local government and education system. Think twice about going down to the Valley and shopping online and see about getting something locally."
Yesterday was a big day for online shoppers nationally. The Associated Press reports that online sales rose 22 percent to $1.25 billion on "Cyber Monday," when retailers ramp up online promotions.
The Cyber Monday numbers point to Americans' growing comfort with using their personal computers, tablets and smartphones to shop.
