World Habitat Day is a week long celebration for Habitat for Humanity of Tuolumne County.

Mary Rose Axiak (Resource Development Manager) and Robin Decker (ReStore Manager) were both Wednesday's KVML "Newsmaker of the Day".

The United Nations has designated the first Monday of October every year as World Habitat Day.

The idea of World Habitat Day is to reflect on the state of our towns and cities and the basic right of all, to adequate shelter. It is also intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat.

Recently, Blue Mountain Minerals of Columbia donated $100,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Tuolumne County which will go towards the local building of the first duplex in the Parrotts Ferry Village subdivision.

A groundbreaking ceremony for Parrotts Ferry Village was held on August 6. The first duplex should be completed later this year, and a second by Spring of 2012.

Over 30 homes will eventually be built on the site at 22185 Parrotts Ferry Road, between Sonora and Columbia.

The Tuolumne County chapter continues to seek volunteers, supplies and financial donations.

The "Newsmaker of the Day" is heard each weekday morning on AM 1450 KVML at 6:47, 7;47 and 8:47am.
