San Andreas, CA-- The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a possible email scam in the area.

Sheriff's detectives received a report of an Arnold woman who had her email compromised by hackers and had at least one friend send money. The Sheriff's Office recommends that computer users do not open any email with "Help!!!!" in the subject line. The message tells a sad story of a person being robbed while abroad and asks for money to be wired ASAP to settle hotel bills or buy a plane ticket home.

The con, called the "money-transfer scam," the "stranded scam" or the "emergency scam" has proliferated in recent months. The FBI has also seen a spike in complaints about the scam.
