Fishing here is a big draw, Amador Lake especially contains giant Donaldson-strain cutbow salmonids. The Lockhart family at Amador Fish Hatchery say that more than 50 years of research went into producing this fish, which is 30 percent steelhead, 50 percent rainbow and 20 percent cutthroat. They are hard fighting, surface-dwelling and acrobatic.
Camache Recreation Area offers not only fishing, but swimming, windsurfing, water-skiing and jet-skiing. Both shores offer comfortable campgrounds or you can rent cottages. The Mokelumne Coast to Crest Trail (MCCT) will be a scenic non-motorized, multi-user trail corridor extending from the Pacific Ocean near San Francisco Bay to the crest of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Martinez Shoreline Regional Park in western Contra Costa County and the Pacific Crest Trail at Ebbetts Pass in the High Sierra form the western and eastern anchor points. Burson Area History
Postal Authorities established Burson Post Office in 1884, The name commemorates David S. Burson a railroad man. -Durham's Place Names
Historical marker number 254 three miles northwest of Burson marks the town Camanche. Once called Limerick, the town became Camanche (after Camanche, Iowa) in 1849. Rich mining at nearby Cat Camp, Poverty Bar, and Sand Hill brought its population to a peak of 1,500. Mokelumne River water was brought in by Lancha Plana and Poverty Bar Ditch. A fire on June 21, 1873 destroyed Camanche's large Chinatown. Buhach, an insect powder made from a plant, was manufactured on the nearby Hill Ranch. Camanche is now inundated by Camanche Reservoir.
