Sacramento, CA — With Kamala Harris moving over to the US Senate, Governor Jerry Brown has announced his pick to become the next California Attorney General.
Brown has selected Congressman Xavier Becerra, 58, of Los Angeles, to become the state’s top lawyer and law enforcement official. Becerra has served in the US House of Representatives since 1992. He is also a past member of the California Senate and a former deputy California Attorney General (1987-1990).
“Governor Brown and our state leaders lean forward when it comes to advancing and protecting the rights and interests of the more than 38 million people in California,” says Becerra. “I’m deeply honored by Governor Brown’s confidence in me to serve as our state’s next chief law enforcement officer.”
The nomination requires confirmation by both the Assembly and Senate. The Governor’s Office notes that Becerra earned a Juris Doctor degree from Stanford Law School and a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Stanford University.
The outgoing Harris was first elected California Attorney General in 2010, and was elected this past month to replace retiring Barbara Boxer as US Senator.
