Prescribed Fire Planned Tomorrow In Calaveras Big Trees

Arnold, CA — Smoke is expected on Thursday near communities like Arnold, Dorrington, Big Trees Village and White Pines.

Calaveras Big Trees State Park is planning to ignite a 41 acre prescribed burn in an area that was previously thinned. The prep work should allow for a safer and more controllable burn. The work is being funded by grants from the Sierra Nevada Conservancy.

The purpose of the prescribed burn is to improve the health and resiliency of the forest. To minimize smoke, the burning activity will be coordinated with the Calaveras County Air Pollution Control District. The burn is expected to last just one day.

The area in purple on the map is the region scheduled to be ignited.
