Sonora, CA – Officials from the MyVote California Student Mock Election say a record-breaking 674 elementary, middle school and high schools voted. According to statewide student mock election results, if California’s youth could make the decisions, President Barack Obama would serve other four-years, Dianne Feinstein would continue in the U.S. Senate and nine of the 11 November ballot propositions would become law. However, one Tuolumne County school bucked that trend. Summerville Union High School Principal, David Johnstone, says out of 700 students 197 voted.
Here’s the breakdown of those votes:
Principal Johnstone says this is a great learning experience for students, “Pretty much what this mock election gives is an explanation of democracy. It lets students know what is going on out there in the world around them and that their voice matters. That’s what our teachers pride themselves in giving that information to students that definitely their vote counts.”
Johnstone says he hopes to get even more students to hit the voting booths in coming mock elections.
