Problems With Illegal Fireworks

Sonora, CA — Law enforcement officials have been responding to some calls related to illegal fireworks in the Mother Lode.

Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jim Oliver says 12 calls came into dispatch on the 4th of July reporting people using illegal fireworks. He says the calls were spread across all areas of the county. No one was caught or cited.

CAL Fire reports that thankfully they did not respond to any fires that started as a result of fireworks in either Tuolumne or Calaveras Counties. It was a relatively quiet Independence Day.

Fines for fireworks start at around $250 per person. Fireworks are banned in all of Tuolumne County, but those labeled “safe and sane” are allowed in many areas of Calaveras County. A complete ban is in place within the Ebbetts Pass Fire District. Fireworks are also banned on all federal lands in both counties.
