Sacramento, CA — Governor Jerry Brown announces that he has signed a bill that will create new minimum standards and policies that law enforcement agencies must follow related to hate crimes.
The bill was passed in both houses of the legislature after a state audit found last month that hate crimes are under-reported by 14-percent. In addition, reported hate crimes increased by 11-percent from 2015-2016. The Assembly bill requires the creation of a protocol for reporting hate crimes to the California Department of Justice and proper training that includes definitions, reporting responsibilities, prevention methods and training resources.
The new policies take effect on January 1st of 2019.
