Yosemite, CA — There is no reopening date for Big Oak Flat Road (Highway 120) yet but road crews are making continued progress even without Mother Nature’s cooperation.
As earlier reported here, crews were able to dig down 65 feet to the bottom of an underground spring that caused soils to erode under the roadway. Yosemite National Park officials detail that the slope has been stabilized with soil and rock brought in to rebuild the roadbed. To date it has been built up 26 feet or about half way to the surface of the road, according to park officials.
Severe winter storms caused a landslide damaging over 200 feet of the roadway forcing its closure from Crane Flat to the Foresta Junction since late February. That stretch of road connects visitors entering via Highway 120 to the Yosemite Valley. However, the park has waived the entrance fee at the Big Oak Flat Entrance. All other gates continue to charge.
