Sonora Residents Injured In Crash: DUI Arrest Made

Calaveras County, CA — Two Sonora residents were injured in a crash early Tuesday morning on Highway 49 near Red Hill Road in Calaveras County.

The CHP reports that 24-year-old Bobby Kelly was driving a 1985 Chevy El Camino at approximately 40 mph and drifted off the shoulder and went down a steep embankment. The vehicle overturned, and a passenger, 18-year-old Mark Ramirez of Sonora, was ejected. The vehicle came to a stop on its roof, approximately 100 ft. down the embankment.

Kelly was initially trapped inside, but was eventually able to free himself so that he could climb up to the road and alert a passing motorist about the crash. Kelly was flown by air ambulance to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto to treat “moderate injuries” and Ramirez was flown to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for “major injuries.” Kelly was later arrested for DUI resulting in major injuries to another person and for driving on a suspended license.
