First Weekend Of August Events

As the hot weather continues through the weekend, there are plenty of activities planned for the first Satruday of August. Before all the Saturday events, Friday evening, August 5th is Magic of the Night. From 6 to 9pm the free public event in Historic Downtown Sonora will feature music and entertainment. A food court will be set up behind Courthouse Park, the Motherlode Corvettes will be on display at the Yosemite Title parking lot, Coffill Park and the Volunteer Fire Museum/Senior Lounge will feature music, and on Linoberg Street Farmers Market vendors of all varieties will offer farm fresh, hand-made food and crafts. The event is put on by the City of Sonora and downtown Sonora’s merchants. Details about all the entertainment are here.

Early Saturday morning children can participate in the Bureau of Reclamation’s Central California Area Office will hold a C.A.S.T. (Catch a Special Thrill) for Kids event on Saturday, August 6, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at New Melones Lake’s Mark Twain Recreation Area, adjacent to the New Melones Lake Administration Center. Also Saturday morning the Sonora Lions present their 5th Annual Glenn Bass Cross Country Run (formerly known as Sonora Lions Pride Stride).  The race is hels at Columbia College Carkeet Park, more details are here.

Saturday will also feature a ‘Stuff the Bus’ event, a bus will be parked near the Sonora Walmart to collect school supply items. A list of items for backpacks that are donated to Tuolumne County students is in the event listing here.

Saturday is also the first quarter final for this years Calaveras Has Talent. The all ages show featurs residents of Calaveras County who auditioned the past three months. Calaveras Has Talent is the lead fundraiser for the Calaveras Youth Organization’s Support Music Calaveras, supporting music education in all Calaveras County Schools. Details on tickets are here. Up in Arnold the Moose Lodge is holding its Annual White Elephant Sale. It will feature Kitchenware, Knick-knacks, other household items, books, games and much more, details are here.
