Groveland, CA — Nearly 6,000 acres could be burned between now and springtime within the Rim Fire footprint.
The US Forest Service reports that ignitions will begin this month on the Rim Fire Recovery prescribed burn within the Mi-Wok and Groveland Ranger Districts. The burn will be carried out in incremental blocks, with size depending on weather and fuel conditions, stretching between Buck Meadows and Cherry Lake. The area will be treated using low intensity prescribed fire.
The Forest Service reports that prescribed burning is an effective, cost efficient method of reducing flammable forest fuels. The Sierra Nevada is a fire dependent ecosystem, where fire is part of the natural forest process.
The Rim Fire ignited on August 17, 2013 and burned over 257,000 acres. It is the third largest fire in the state’s recorded history.
