Allow Drug Breathalyzers?

Sacramento, CA — A Republican California lawmaker has introduced legislation that would allow law enforcement to use drug breathalyzers to detect if drivers are impaired by marijuana, or other drugs.

Assemblyman Tom Lackey says, “As legislators, we a have a responsibility to be problem solvers. We must not wait for more senseless tragedy, before we take action with such commonsense approach.”

Lackey is a former CHP Officer. The legislation is endorsed by groups like the California Police Chiefs Association. Oral fluid devices can detect marijuana used within a 2-3 hour time frame, and can also detect drugs like cocaine.

Pro medical marijuana groups have raised concerns that it could negatively place medical marijuana users in the same category as drunk drivers.
