Update On Sonora High School Lawsuit

Sonora, CA — The Sonora High School Board met earlier this week and discussed the lawsuit filed by Larry Coombes on behalf of the Citizens Against School Bond Abuse (CASBA).

Superintendent Dr. Mike McCoy says,  “I am hoping we can resolve our differences with these 4 or 5 individuals in the community that have decided that they want to sue our district.” McCoys says if they can not resolve the differences, “we will have to look for alternative housing for students and we will also have to look for alternative athletic venues for spring sports.”

Superintendent McCoy says, “It has already had a very, very negative impact on our students, on our community and on our teaching staff.” McCoy says it will cost more than $100,000 in attorney fees and February is the earliest they could get in for an organizational meeting with attorneys.

Superintendent McCoy reports, “I had an emergency meeting with my contractors and our architect and so they are working on what they can do as a possible amendment.” McCoy notes that in addition to the aquatic center the lawsuit also contests the parking lot and bridge. He says the bridge “is for the disabled into the stadium because our stadium is not accessible for disabled people,” and added “by attacking those two pieces they froze up the stadium project too. I don’t know if that was their intent but that is what the consequence was.” McCoy also says, “We are hopeful we can work on our humanities building.”

Coombes said the lawsuit is “a mandate against destruction of the community pool to stop the school district from continuing to promote a project that isn’t described in the bond. To build a new pool and put in a new aquatic center you need to put that in the bond, it is required by the law.”
