Foresta, CA — Metal sparks are being blamed for igniting the Dog Rock Fire near El Portal in western Yosemite National Park. Fire investigators believe that the fire was started by sparks generated from hot metal fragments by a vehicle. Fire investigators says the sparks could have come from trailer safety chains dragging on the pavement, vehicle brake parts generating a spark or other sources.
Park Officials warn the dry conditions make it possible for a single spark to start a wildland fire. They are asking visitors make sure their vehicles are maintained and operated safely within the park.
The fire remains 250 acres and 10% contained. Residents in the Foresta area where 60 homes were threatened by the flames were allowed back into their home at 1 p.m. today. Power is still out in the Yosemite Valley and Highway 140 remains closed at the Arch Rock Station entrance.
