Yosemite Orders Fire Restrictions

Yosemite, CA — You can no longer have a campfire in the wilderness below 6,000 feet elevation in Yosemite National Park. The restrictions went into effect yesterday due to the drought conditions.

Ranger Kari Cobb says, “The vegetation in the specific areas of the restrictions are so dry, we do know it can ignite very quickly. We are just taking every precaution that we can.”

Forest Officials say the conditions are comparable to the major drought of the 1970’s and the order is designed to reduce the chances of a man made fire. Cobb says this this is not the first time this type of ban has been implemented in the Park, but it is rare.  She adds it has not happened in the nine years she has been in with the Park.

Campfires in designated campgrounds and picnic areas will still be allowed. The current restrictions will remain in effect until further notice. Click here for more information on the fire restrictions.
