Senior Health Center Closed To Visitors

Sonora, CA — The Avalon Care Center in Sonora has been closed to the public since Wednesday due to an out of control infection. The senior center is located on Greenley Road.  More than 50 residents have come down with the Noro Virus.

Avalon Care Center Day Manager Jane Powell explains, “We don’t have visitors coming in and we can’t admit people right now.”

Avalon Care Company Spokesperson Kelly Selman say the virus is very contagious and spread through vomit or bowel movements. She says it is not a respiratory virus. Powell adds the center currently has 196 patients.

“We are hoping that by Tuesday we won’t have any new case for 48 hours in which case it [the Center] will open right back up again,” says Powell. “That’s kind of the time line the health department suggests, but it’s definitely up to the corporation.”

Selman says the virus usually last 24 hours, and that is what they are experiencing with residents who are sick. She adds the virus is not life threatening.
