Smokey Skies Have Residents Concerned

Sonora, CA — Many of you have been alerting us to the smoke filled skies over the Stanislaus National Forest, the plumes you’re seeing are not from wildfire but prescribed burns in the area. As we reported earlier, smoke can be seen off of Highway 108 near Twain Harte and Mi-Wuk Village. It is coming from the Crandall Understory burn in the Mi-Wok Ranger District that was sparked this past Wednesday and will continue for several weeks.

A total of 280 acres will be burned off of Italian Bar Road south of Deer Creek and along Forest Road 3N24. Forest Service officials want to alert residents and motorists drifting smoke may also be seen in the canyon during the early morning and evening hours.

Also, the forest service announced a handful of other burns in the forest areas of Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties. Nearly 200 acres will be burned at various times, as conditions allow over the fall and winter months.
