Non-Tax Filers Beware

The state Franchise Tax Board is mailing 450,000 tax assessments to California residents who have not filed a 1999 state income tax return. The assessment asks for past due returns to be completed or payment extensions to be filed with the state. The board´s position is that unpaid taxes puts an unfair burden on California residents who pay theirs.

The FTB sorted through 220 million income records this year to locate non-filers in the state.
