Wildfire In San Bernadino National Forest

Firefighters are moving to combat a five-acre wildfire this morning in the San Bernardino National Forest. The U.S. Forest Service says the fire in mountain foothills northeast of San Bernardino near Crestline was first reported about 2:30 a.m. in an unpopulated forest area near Waterman Canyon. At daybreak two firefighting air tankers and two helicopters were working to quell the blaze near California Highway 18. Three more air tankers and three additional helicopters were being readied to join the effort. A Forest Service spokeswoman says there are light winds in the fire area this morning with an increase to eight to 15 miles per hour expected during the day.

Although national fire and weather officials say this year´s disastrous Western wildfire season may be over in most of the region, they are concerned that extremely dry conditions will continue the danger in Southern California for several more months.
