A bit of Santa Clara Valley rail history appears to be doomed – and that€™s making some rail buffs unhappy. The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority says it wants to demolish the historic Southern Pacific water tower at Diridon Station.
A public hearing on the plan is set for tomorrow.
The 48-foot-tall tower is topped by a 55,000-gallon steel tank. It went up in 1935 and is part of the old depot – which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Now, it´s standing on the future tracks of the Vasona Light Rail Project, which is scheduled to be finished in 2006. Fixing it up would cost as much as $250,000.
