Shelley Expected To Resign

California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley may soon resign.

A news conference is scheduled for this afternoon in front of Shelley´s San Francisco home.

Shelley has been plagued by allegations that he mishandled his oversight of $46 million in federal Help America Vote Act funds. A state audit last December found his office had managed the funds poorly. The audit also said it didn´t properly oversee the consultants it hired.

Yesterday Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez said Shelley should not be forced to testify before a legislative panel if he decides to resign his office.

Shelley´s appearance before the Joint Legislative Audit Committee was bumped back after independent counsels appointed by both Democrats and Republicans said they needed more time to review the case.
